With his name on the Stanley Cup and his history of playing alongside high-caliber strength, it’s understandable why Mike Knuble likes his hockey life.
But for all of the fun he had while winning a term with the Detroit Red Wings early in his career before building his offensive résumé with the New York Rangers, Boston Bruins and Philadelphia Flyers, the winger jumped at the wager to join the Washington Capitals this summer. Knuble remembers marveling at Capitals elevated-scoring forward Alex Ovechkin and others when he was with the Flyers.
“You’re going to be in for a good-skating trade and have to be ready,” said Knuble, who returns to Philadelphia on Tuesday. “It’s fun to see (Ovechkin) every day, and you start to covenant much more what he does well. Everybody sees the goals and the final result, but you get to watch how he gets to the aim and beats guys, you see it more playing with him and how he makes something out of nothing.”
Knuble’s knack for cleaning up around the crease is the plain reason Washington sought him after he averaged 55 points the past four seasons with Philadelphia. Not having a contender like Knuble cost the Capitals in last season’s Eastern Conference semifinal series, when the Pittsburgh Penguins’ Sidney Crosby always seemed to be a stone's throw from the goal to put away a rebound.
The 12-year veteran offered similar glimpses with a tandem join up-high four goals in the preseason. He scored his first regular-season goal Saturday in his home base debut, knocking in a power-play rebound after he won a battle with the Toronto Maple Leafs’ Francois Beauchemin, part of a 6-4 crushing that has Washington off to a 2-0 start.
