People Who Fly Fish: Ken Griffey Jr.
One of the last people you'd conjecture to go fly fishing this time of year, Ken Griffey Jr. reportedly tried his hand at fly fishing earlier in the week with Seattle Mariners head Don Wakamatsu.
But it makes sense, really. Griffey, nearing what could be the end of his Major League Baseball livelihood, probably needed some time to get away and think - even if it was during the final week of the regular occasion.
That's what I love about fly fishing, it allows you to escape the daily rigors of everyday life ... not to indicate your own thoughts, losing yourself in the push and pull of the fly rod.
So it was no surprise when I read Wakamatsu's quote that said they never once talked about his approaching, if he was retiring, or much of anything baseball related for that matter.
In fact, seems like the only thing they talked about was fishing, and what readily available Griffey should be casting with. It was also no surprise that one of the best all-around athletes of our generation had a pretty solid day on the profligately, hooking a nice-sized salmon on his first-ever fly fishing trip.
So I guess if Griffey walks away from the tourney this weekend, we know who's to blame.

Out of all the marked players of this era that have been linked to steroids and performance enhancing drugs . . .
Derek Jeter and Ken Griffey Jr. have got to be the only "untouchable" players to baseball fans when it comes to PHD's or steroids.
If these two guys' names ever were linked to something questionable then I would have to believe that all baseball fans hearts would be broken.
I would be so down and extremely surprised. Jeter is the only baseball player I really trust to not have taken steroids. My kindliness would definately be broken if Griffey or Jeter were linked to that stuff.
